Movement Specialist, Martial Artist, Philosopher
I am Brent Brayshaw, specialist and philosopher of movement. I am a Certified Personal Trainer with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), a DNS Certified Exercise Trainer, and a Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Instuctor.
I earned both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton.
Much of my life has been shaped by movement, from learning martial arts to hiking in the mountains. These activities have brought me a natural fulfillment and understanding of my body. I strive each day to explore the limits of my whole being--body, mind, soul. I believe movement is much more than just a physical phenomenon. It defines us as living beings, and changes not just our physical forms, but our minds and spirit as well. Movement affects all things in the universe, and intentional movement is what separates life from non-living matter. Thus, not only do we learn about ourselves through movement, but we gain wisdom and connection to everything around us.
I hope I may spend my life sharing the joy of movement with all I meet. Thus, in addition to the blog and my general background, I have dedicated part of this site to Tai Chi Summit: a group of friends and colleagues that share a love for movement, especially in the martial arts. For me, martial arts have influenced my philosophy and understanding of the world and my place in it. The great swordsman-philosopher, Miyamoto Musashi, followed Budō (武道), a philosophy stating a devotion to martial arts develops not only one's martial abilities, but one's abilities in all things. I feel this philosophy captures the essence of human movement as a unifying force to change the world!
